Judge, police chief lead Law Day at Eastern View
The local Circuit Court Judge joined the Chief of Police recently to address Eastern View High School students about the responsibilities that come with turning 18.
“As graduation approaches, the Culpeper Bar Association and law enforcement agencies speak to high school seniors about the rights and responsibilities that come from turning 18,” said Culpeper County Circuit Court Judge Dale Durrer.
Nicknamed “Law Day,” law professionals visit schools to educate rising seniors about topics, such as voting, signing contracts, military service, jury duty, driving laws, being charged criminally as an adult and other responsibilities allocated to them as they become a legal adult according to Virginia and federal law, according to a release.
President Dwight D. Eisenhower established Law Day in 1958 to celebrate the rule of law in a free society. In 1961, Congress passed a joint resolution declaring May 1 as “Law Day.” According to the American Bar Association, the theme for this year’s Law Day is “Voices of Democracy.”

Following introductions at the April 30 program, students asked questions ranging from jury selection and service, the DMV demerit system, probation, parole and search and seizure law.
Durrer said, “The students asked great questions demonstrating a great deal of intellectual curiosity. We appreciate the invitation and hospitality of EVHS.”

‘Stories of Service’ for Military Appreciation Month
U.S. Rep. Abigal Spanberger, D-7th, this week relaunched her survey to gather stories of service from Virginians with loved ones who are active duty servicemembers or veterans.
During Military Appreciation Month, Spanberger’s “Stories of Service” survey gives Virginians the opportunity to share the personal stories of a servicemember or veteran in their lives. The congresswoman will save and share many of the stories to recognize the personal sacrifices of Virginians in uniform. See press releases at spanberger.house.gov for the link to enter a story.
“We, as Americans, owe a great debt of gratitude to every servicemember — past and present — who has served our country in uniform. As the daughter and granddaughter of veterans, I understand that we are undoubtedly freer thanks to the service and sacrifice of Virginians who have answered the call,” said Spanberger.
“This Military Appreciation Month, I hope to honor the service and sacrifice of the hundreds of thousands of veterans, active duty servicemembers and military families who call Virginia home. Their service shapes our shared history, and I hope many Virginians will join me by sharing the story of a friend, neighbor, relative or loved one who served.”
