SPORTS SHORTS: Rebels rack up five goals against Denver

DENVER — Hudson Clark and Treyvon Herron had two goals apiece as the Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys’ soccer team beat Denver 5-1 on Friday.

The Rebels (7-5) outscored the host Cyclones 3-0 in the second half to break open a one-goal game. Klayton Freed added a goal and an assist, and Karson Van Heiden also contributed an assist to the final scoresheet.

Devin Boldt made six saves in net for GC/G-R. The Rebels got 14 shots on goal against Denver’s Vincent Fordyce en route to the victory.

Spartan girls edged out at own golf tourney

GRUNDY CENTER — The Grundy Center girls’ golf team got edged out for the team title on Saturday at the Rick Schupbach Classic, trailing only Sumner-Fredericksburg by six strokes.

The Spartans shot a 351 for second place, while the Cougars carded a 345 behind meet medalist Chloe Bolte’s even-par 72.

Oelwein (354), Jesup (381), Dike-New Hartford (398), South Tama (434) and GMG (520) rounded out the tournament field.

Dike-New Hartford’s Keely Kauten was runner-up medalist at 82, while Grundy Center’s Leah Larson was third with an 83. Avery Knutsen shot 85, Holly Lubbert had a 91, and Reagan Pekarek carded a 92 for the Spartans.

Aubrey Dolezal shot an 89 to finish in ninth place to lead South Tama.

GC/G-R boys tennis splits NICL pair

The Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys’ tennis team rebounded from a narrow loss to Aplington-Parkersburg on Thursday by blasting Oelwein on Friday.

The Spartans (10-3) were edged out by A-P, 5-4, on Thursday night in Aplington. The two teams split singles play, 3-3, before the host Falcons won two of three doubles bouts.

Carson Laube, Michael Lang and Evan Bingman recorded singles wins for the Spartans. Kael Edwards and Remington Tack fell behind a set but battled back for the 5-7, 6-4 (10-6) victory at No. 3 doubles.

On Friday, GC/G-R turned away Oelwein by an 8-1 score at the George Wilhelm Sports Complex in Grundy Center. The Spartans swept singles play with wins from Elias Cakerice, Edwards, Bingman, Dayton Myers, Lincoln Lewis and Oliver Del Castillo. Myers and Tack teamed for a No. 2 doubles victory, while Bingman and Del Castillo scored the win at No. 3.

Union-North Tama girls soccer outscores Sailors

LA PORTE CITY — The Union-North Tama girls’ soccer team used a fast start to defeat Waterloo Columbus (1-11) on Friday, outscoring the Sailors 5-3 behind a hat trick from freshman Ellie Pospisil.

Avery Knoop had a goal and two assists, Josie Bergmeier scored a goal, and Ava Monat (North Tama) also recorded an assist. Pospisil pitched in an assist as well for the Knights (5-6-3), who led 4-1 at the half.

Addie Pospisil made six saves in net for Union-North Tama.

West Marshall boys at the center of HOIAC track

STATE CENTER — The West Marshall boys’ track and field team finished in the middle of the nine-team field at Thursday’s Heart of Iowa Conference meet.

The Trojans tallied 77 points for fifth place, following PCM (159), Nevada (138.5), Roland-Story (111.5) and Greene County (88).

Senior high jumper Lucas Barnes collected West Marshall’s lone conference championship, winning with a final height of 6 feet, 4 inches. Teammate Ryder Gile was fourth after clearing 5-8.

Jace Eich posted his season-low time to place second in the 100-meter dash, clocking in at 10.83 seconds, while Kinnick Geers was fourth in a season-best 11.41.

Eich also placed second in the 400 in 49.42, while Evan Siegert set his season-best time of 52.17 for third place.

Eich added a third-place finish in the 200 with a season-best 22.51, and he also anchored for the sprint medley relay, which took third in a season-low time of 1:34.29. Geers, Calvin Streeter, Siegert and Eich combined for the bronze.

Schuler’s high jump title leads Trojan girls at HOIAC

STATE CENTER — The West Marshall girls’ track and field team placed seventh out of nine teams at the Heart of Iowa Conference meet on Thursday night in State Center.

The Trojans totaled 62 points to finish one point behind South Hamilton for sixth. Roland-Story ran away with the HOIAC title with 166 points and PCM was second at 122.

Kylee Schuler captured West Marshall’s lone conference title, winning the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 2 inches. Ryleigh Storjohann was third in the same event after clearing 4-10.

Addie Thompson narrowly missed out in the 3,000-meter run, finishing second in a season-best time of 11 minutes, 24.73 seconds. Grand View Christian’s Lydia Parlee won with an 11:23.09.

Amelia Ranson posted her season-low to take third in the 100 hurdles with a time of 17.35, and she also led off for West Marshall’s third-place sprint medley team. Ranson, Sophie Simms, Storjohann and Dalaney Eldridge combined for a season-best time of 1:58.82.

Thompson also took fifth in the 1,500 with a season-low 5:28.58. The Trojans’ 4×800 squad of Mia Christianson, McKenna Clark, Emma Case and Summer Kurth was fifth in a season-best 11:23.71, and the shuttle hurdle foursome of Makaylie Tarbell, Lilie Rosedale, Sophia Beebe and Avery Buck also posted a season-low of 1:18.55.
